Along with the concept of ‘going green,’ many people have decided to look into the purchase of a hybrid vehicle. In the first years of hybrid production, the cars were very plain in appearance as they were designed to be as fuel efficient as possible. The first hybrids also did not have very much power, which really frustrated a lot of people when they seemed to struggle making it uphill Now, times have changed and the cars have been on the market for several years. Hybrids are now available in sports cars. There are a handful of top selling hybrid cars on today’s market.

Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius was the first hybrid to hit mass production, being released in the Japanese market in 1997. This was one of the plainest cars on the road during the first nine or ten years of production. However, people were shocked knowing they could drive something that got between 45 and 50 miles per gallon in the city limits. No longer did they have to worry about burning up gas, while stopped in city traffic. The gasoline powered engine would be shut down while at low speeds and when the vehicle was stopped. They Prius is what led other models to release a hybrid option.

Honda Civic Hybrid

People who are fans of the Honda flagship, can now drive an even more fuel efficient vehicle. While it only gets around 43 miles per gallon, it does have a little more power than the Prius. The Civic also has a little more passenger room, which was another complaint from Prius drivers.

Lexus 250H

Now here is what hybrid technology is supposed to be like. The luxurious comforts of driving a Lexus with a sporty appearance and still getting 35 miles per gallon. This has a significant amount of power for any drivers, assuming they do not intend to take it to the local drag strip. This is sort of a unique hybrid, as drivers can select between four modes; electric, power, normal or eco.

Cadillac Escalade

Here is the ultimate people hauler. Owners can ride in style, all while receiving a little better mileage than typical full-size sport utility vehicles. This ride will give owners 20 miles per gallon in the city and 23 on the highway, a little unusual considering that most hybrids show the biggest improvement during city driving. The Escalade can be shifted between two modes to receive the optimum mileage.
